Band of Bakers is a bake club for south east London. It provides an opportunity for local bakers to get together and share their latest creations over a drink and a chat.
The idea came from an initial meeting between Gemma and Naomi in an East Dulwich pub. “We noticed that there was a strong love of food and baking in our local area, an abundance of cafes, delis and food stalls, and plenty of active bloggers, but nothing to bring it all together. Our aim was to be fully inclusive, hold free events and build a local community with a common interest. We have no criteria for members, as long as they are happy to bring along something that they have baked, we welcome them. One of the most important aspects of Band of Bakers is that it is accessible and non-competitive – we want everybody to leave feeling good about what they’ve created and, most importantly, share this with others and make a few new friends.”
Band of Bakers held its first event in May 2012 and since then has held a number of events in local south east London venues. Some of the bakers featured in the Christmas 2012 issue of delicious. magazine and in the final episode of Paul Hollywood’s BBC Two series Bread. In autumn 2013 Band of Bakers helped Dan Lepard to launch his iconic baking bible Short and Sweet in the Netherlands by hosting a special event with bakes from the book.
